Cecum (Cecum)
Educational content only — not medical advice.
Anatomy
The first pouch of the large intestine in the right iliac fossa (~6 cm), receiving the ileum through the Bauhin valve that prevents reflux; the appendix arises at the convergence of the three taeniae coli — the surgeon’s landmark for locating it.
Clinical notes
Its wide calibre and thin wall make it the classic perforation site in solid obstruction; cancer here presents with occult anaemia rather than early obstruction because the stool is still liquid.
