Puborectalis (Left) (Musculus puborectalis)
Educational content only — not medical advice.
Anatomy
The puborectalis forms a dynamic U-shaped muscular sling around the anorectal junction, originating from the pubis and maintaining the anorectal angle. In this BP3D model, the muscle is represented across two separate mesh parts (part 2).
Origin & insertion
From the posterior surface of the pubis, encircling the anorectal junction to join the contralateral fibers.
Action
Constricts the anorectal junction to maintain continence; relaxes synchronously during defecation.
Innervation
Nerve to levator ani (S4) and pudendal nerve branches (S2–S4).
Clinical notes
Biofeedback therapy is an established modality to retrain paradoxical contraction of the puborectalis muscle in dyssynergic defecation.
